Good morning all….
__________ and I (_______
parents) have talked to ________’ (student) advisor____________, and
___________ (dean of students) about ________’ (student) ski racing schedule
and how to minimize the impact it has on his/her school attendance.
Some background….
________ (student) has been aggressively involved in ski racing for the past
(?) years, and has achieved some significant successes. He/she has consistently
ranked quite high, (examples) even finishing 2nd and 3rd
in events at the Junior Olympics held in Colorado. ________ is passionate
about this sport, and gives it a great deal of his time and focus. He/she also
knows that school comes first, so he/she understands our expectation that
he/she stays on top of his/her school work and completes his/her assignments in
a timely manner throughout ski season, even when he/she is away from school.
For the past several years, _________ has almost consistently had his/her
grades go up during ski season. He/she has put several strategies into place to
make it possible for him/her to stay current with schoolwork during ski season.
These include:
Ÿ
identifying
2 classmates in each class on whom to rely for notes and to call and find out
about classroom discussion and assignments,
Ÿ
talking to
teachers well in advance of planned absences for assignments and making
arrangements to make up missed labs, tests, etc.
Ÿ
doing his
schoolwork on the road so he/she doesn’t get behind, and
Ÿ
being very organized and planning ahead for schoolwork due dates
Attached is ________’ ski
racing calendar. It’s color coded to show 1) School vacation dates, 2) dates
that ______ plans to be absent for ski races, and 3) dates for races or ski
camps that we are still considering, but have not yet finalized.
__________ asked that I
distribute this to all of you so you would have it well in advance and be able
to look at your winter curriculum to see how this fits with his/her planned
absences. If there are any significant red flags or concerns, it would be
helpful to know that now so we can plan accordingly. You can either e-mail me,
or discuss this directly with ________.
